The aim of the project related to the offered position is to develop and implement non linear control strategies for the fuel-cell-based vehicles. Based
on a state of the art related to air turbo-compressor technology. the work will be focused on both the design of control strategies and the
experimental validation of Hardware in the Loop (Hil) approaches at component level . The technology under study involves a 10-12 kW air
turbo-compressor prototype based on high speed brush less motors, using radial compression, water cooled, air bearings and an improved
electronics able to reduce power losses respect to standard devices with 3-phase inverters.
According to the V-Model development procedure, testing and validation on component basis, will be performed on HIL as well as on system level is
necessary. The dynamic efficiency and performance of the turbo-compressor is one of the main points to be addressed and improved through
advanced non linear control. Brose has the necessary test benches for motor and compressors validation, which will be fully available for the
complete PhD project. In a first step, the turbo-compressor system will be investigated with focus on characteristic diagrams. These will help to
ensure the claimed impacts for the turbo-compressor in stationary points. But not only performance, also life duration is an important matter that
will be addressed and therefore, accelerated tests will be performed. The second step will be investigation on the dynamics, especially of the
compressor. Then, tests under variable operating conditions will provide an evaluation of the system. Finally, the turbo-compressor system is also
tested integrated in the fuel cell based car provided by Volvo Cars.
