Alejandro Blanco Martínez became, on Monday, the new doctor of the UVic-UCC, after defending his thesis within the framework of the Doctoral Programme in "Experimental Sciences and Technologies". Entitled Study and design of classification algorithms for diagnosis and prognosis of failures in Wind Turbines from SCADA data", the study was led by Doctors Jordi Solé Casals, Pere Martí Puig and Jordi Cusidó Roura. Blanco has developed it as an industrial doctorate through an agreement with the company iTesTIT, S.L.

Blanco has developed a new method based on Self Organizing Maps (SOM) or self-organized map, that is, a type of artificial neural network. This method allows you to see the operating points of wind turbines, as well as group them according to their state of health, which is unknown a priori. It has also shown how the automatic elimination of outliers, that is, of atypical or numerically distant values from the rest of the data, removes the information from the failures necessary to make predictions. Finally, he has made a comparison of the methods of selection and reduction of variables applied to wind turbines.

The panel, formed by Doctors Marcos Faúndez-Zanuy of Tecnocampus Mataró, Karmele López de Ipiña of the University of the Basque Country, and Moses Serra Serra of the UVic-UCC, awarded Blanco's thesis the qualification of excellent Cum Laude, with the industrial mention.
