Nuage Therapeutics has been awarded the Innovation Award for the Creation of a Science-Based Company at the 34th edition of the National Research Awards 2023 , held by the Generalitat de Catalunya. This distinction recognizes the excellence in research and innovation of the company , which participates in the Industrial Doctorate Plan with an applied research project with the aim of developing effective treatments for cancer and other incurable diseases.
The National Research Awards are the highest distinctions in research in Catalonia, recognizing the research activity of scientists linked to the country. This edition has stood out for recognizing initiatives that promote open science and citizen participation in research .
Nuage Therapeutics, a spin-off of the Institute for Biomedical Research (IRB) of Barcelona and the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), was founded in 2021 with the aim of developing new drugs for the treatment of cancer and other incurable diseases. The company focuses on intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), which are traditionally difficult to target but are associated with several diseases.
Nuage Therapeutics' industrial PhD project, in collaboration with the University of Barcelona (UB) and IRB Barcelona, investigates the molecular basis of the selectivity of molecules targeting intrinsically disordered proteins in biomolecular condensates. This research has allowed the company to develop an innovative technology that transiently orders these proteins, making them susceptible to inhibition by drugs.
The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, led the award ceremony at the National Theatre of Catalonia, highlighting Catalonia as a benchmark in scientific research and the knowledge society . Aragonès stressed the importance of investment in research, which in 2023 exceeded 1,000 million euros.
President Aragonès stated: “ Catalonia is a benchmark country from the point of view of scientific research and the knowledge society .” For his part, the Minister of Research and Universities, Joaquim Nadal, highlighted that the National Research Awards are a thermometer of the evolution of science in Catalonia , creating tradition and excellence in research.
